Each year more than 125,000 students in grades 6-8 enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest nationwide. This year, three Tabb Middle students won all three awards at our local level. Congratulations to first place winner, Jacob Grieme; second place winner, Jatin Tiwari; and third place winner, Sinaya Hairston. The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history.

Public, private and home-schooled middle school students submitted 232 entries in the annual VFW Patriot's Pen Essay Contest, sponsored by VFW Post 2667 and Auxiliary in Newnan and coordinated by Tom Fetchet, Janet Alford and Kathy Shiver. Sixteen judges selected first, second and third place winners overall, as well as from each school.

Every year, the Sgt. Harold O. Young VFW Post 2394 sponsors a scholarship contest, the Patriot’s Pen Essay, for students in grades six through eight. This year, the theme was “The America I Believe in.” Students were required to submit an original work in their own words, without identifying themselves in the essay.

As first place winners, Faith and Andrew qualified for the District 4 Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen contests. The top three entries at the District level will be recognized at a banquet.

Three Regents Academy students won all three places in this year’s Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Patriot’s Pen essay contest among all 6th-8th grade students in Nacogdoches County.
